Standard route decision guide

Choose a target that solves the delivery problem without buying empty pixels

Video upscaling changes frame dimensions, but a larger file is not automatically a better deliverable. The useful decision is whether the processed clip looks cleaner at the size and bitrate where an audience will actually watch it. Use a short segment that contains representative motion, faces, text, gradients, and compression. Estimate that segment first, compare it with the source, and only then decide whether the same route and resolution are worth applying to more footage.

Start from the source defect, not the 4K label

The Standard route is a practical test for clips that are small, softly encoded, or visibly compressed. A reasonably clean social export, screen recording, product spin, archive excerpt, or proofing clip may gain clearer edges and a more usable presentation. The route cannot recover a face hidden by motion blur, restore clipped highlights, rebuild unreadable lettering, or reverse severe prior editing with factual accuracy.

Inspect the source at normal playback speed and frame by frame before spending credits. If the main problem is camera shake, missing frames, incorrect color, damaged audio, or a watermark, upscaling is not the complete repair. Fix those issues in an appropriate editor first, then use the strongest lawful master available as the input. Repeatedly upscaling an already artificial output usually compounds halos, invented texture, and compression residue.

Match resolution to the real export and viewing distance

Choose 720p when you need a lightweight review copy, 1080p for common web and presentation delivery, and 2K or 4K only when the destination, crop, display, or edit genuinely benefits from the larger frame. If a platform immediately recompresses the upload, a very large intermediate can cost more without producing a visible audience benefit. Preserve the source aspect ratio and check whether your editor or publishing channel imposes its own dimensions.

Resolution is separate from perceptual detail. A 4K output can still contain soft faces, unstable text, or repeated compression blocks. Compare the result at the final display size, not only at 400% zoom. Also inspect a downscaled version, because modest downsampling can hide some generated texture while sharpening other artifacts. Keep the smallest output that passes the actual delivery review; that choice reduces credits, transfer time, storage, and retry exposure.

Use the verified estimate as a budget checkpoint

Customer credits are calculated from server-verified duration and the selected target resolution, with a five-second minimum. The browser estimate is useful for planning, but the server is the authority before a job is accepted. Longer clips and larger outputs consume more credits, so split a long project into representative segments instead of using the most expensive setting as an exploratory first run. Every submitted segment is a separate billable job.

For a series, calculate the likely total from a sample with similar duration and resolution, then leave room for a rejected result or an editorial change. A one-time pack can cover individual work, while a subscription only makes sense when its usable credits and renewal cadence match repeat demand. Do not compare plans by headline credit count alone: the useful measure is how many approved outputs the plan produces after failures, retries, and quality review.

Approve motion, identity, text, and delivery compatibility

Review scene cuts, pans, fast hands, hair, fine fabric, fences, subtitles, logos, and small faces. Look for shimmer, crawling texture, halos, duplicated edges, ghosting, invented lettering, or identity changes. Compare the same timestamps with the source and record why the result passes or fails. A still frame that looks sharper does not prove that the full sequence is temporally stable.

Download the result promptly and test it in the player, editor, and publishing path you actually use. Confirm duration, frame dimensions, aspect ratio, audio behavior, playback, and final compression. Keep the original, because the generated output is a derivative rather than a replacement master. If Standard misses the acceptance criteria, compare one matched segment with Pro; do not assume the higher-cost route will win on every shot.

Before processing the full clip

  • Choose a short segment that includes the hardest motion, smallest faces, text, gradients, and compression found in the full source.
  • Compare identical timestamps at normal speed and frame by frame; reject unstable edges, flicker, ghosting, or identity drift.
  • Verify captions, labels, logos, and product details against the original instead of trusting plausible generated shapes.
  • Test the downloaded file in the final editor or platform and approve its dimensions, audio, playback, and recompressed appearance.
