Scans and typed page legibility

Enhance a scanned document and check every character

A scan is a photograph of paper, so its lettering obeys the same rules as any photo of fine detail. A careful upscale can make a page easier to read on screen, but it cannot turn a blurry scan into editable text, and it can quietly change a digit or a name. Scan well first, enhance second, and verify the result against the paper original.

Rescan before you enhance

A flat page at 300 or 600 dpi, squared to the glass and free of glare, gives the tool far more to work with than a phone photo of a curled sheet.

Lettering is the hardest part

OCR and upscaling are different jobs. The tool raises pixels; it does not produce selectable text, and it may alter a character while making the page look cleaner.

Verify against the paper

Check every number, date and name with the original document. An invented character can survive a quick glance and cause real harm in a contract or statement.

For when a scan must be read, not re-typed

If you still hold the source file or the paper, produce a fresh, high-resolution scan first. Enhancing is for the cases where the only usable copy is the bitmap you already have.

  • Someone reading a decades-old certificate
  • A householder sharing a scanned bill or letter

Document scan decision guide

Prepare a clean scan before you try to enhance it

The single biggest factor in how a scanned document looks is the scan itself, not the enhancement that follows. Fix the capture first, then decide whether a pixel pass is even necessary, and always keep the untouched file as your record.

Improving the capture before spending a credit

A flat page pressed onto the glass, squared to the edges and lit evenly, gives an upscaler far more to work with than a hand-held photo taken at an angle under a ceiling light. Aim for 300 dpi when the page only needs to be read on screen, and 600 dpi when someone may later zoom into footnotes, small print or a table. Remove staples, unfold creases, and avoid flash, because a glare hotspot can erase text that the paper itself still carries.

Once the capture is clean, decide whether enhancement is warranted at all. If the scan is already sharp and evenly lit, an extra pass may add little beyond file size. Enhancement is most useful when a slightly soft page must be enlarged for reading, or when an old scan was made at a low resolution that cannot be repeated because the paper has since degraded or been returned to an archive.

Why lettering needs the strictest review

Text is the hardest thing for any pixel predictor to handle well, because letters are small, high-contrast and full of meaning. A stroke that gains weight, a digit that gains a little tail, or two characters that merge can turn a correct number into a wrong one while the page looks cleaner overall. The tool raises pixel count and may sharpen perceived edges, but it does not decide what a character should say; that judgment stays with you.

Optical character recognition is a completely separate job. Enhancement does not read the page, does not produce selectable or searchable text, and does not fix a misread. If you need editable or indexed text for a contract, a legal filing or an archive catalogue, going back to a re-typed or vector original always beats an upscaled bitmap, because a fresh original carries no invented characters at all.

Verifying, archiving and handling sensitive pages

Compare the enhanced result against the paper original, not merely against the earlier scan, and read every number, date, personal name, account reference and monetary amount one by one. Check faint stamps, signatures and seals too, since a predictor can add or merge marks that were never printed. Anything that will be relied on for money, identity or legal rights deserves a second pair of eyes on the physical document.

Keep the untouched scan as the copy of record and treat the enhanced version as a convenience rendering. Before uploading, remember that a scanned page is sensitive personal or business data: remove pages you do not need, and think about retention obligations before sending a statement, contract or identity document to any online service. Download an acceptable result promptly and delete what you no longer need.

Scanned document checklist

  • The page was rescanned flat, squared and glare-free at a suitable dpi.
  • Every number, date and name was checked against the paper original.
  • The untouched scan is kept and the enhanced copy is clearly a rendering.
  • Sensitive pages and retention rules were considered before uploading.

What to decide before spending credits

Start by asking whether resolution is the real constraint. Upscaling increases pixel dimensions and may improve perceived edge or texture detail, but it does not make an inaccurate source truthful. A tiny crop, severe blur, blown highlights, blocked shadows, or unreadable lettering may remain unusable at a larger size. For products, portraits, artwork, and archival photos, compare the output with the original subject instead of judging sharpness alone.

Plain Upscaler is currently a manual, single-image workflow. Upload a supported file, select the available scale and model settings, review the on-screen credit estimate, and submit one job. The server decodes and verifies the actual image dimensions before accepting the charge, so renaming a file or changing browser data cannot lower the authoritative cost. There is no public customer API, digital-asset-manager integration, or unattended catalog batch in this workflow.

Use a representative test image before processing a collection. Pick one file with the same camera source, compression, subject matter, and defects as the rest of the set. Inspect faces, hands, lettering, logos, straight lines, repeating patterns, and high-contrast edges at 100 percent. AI enhancement can invent plausible-looking detail; that may be acceptable for decorative art and unacceptable for identity, evidence, restoration, product claims, or faithful reproduction.

The pricing page is the source of truth for currently enabled subscriptions and one-time credit packs. Limited starter credit may be enough for a small test, while regular production requires paid credit. Keep your original locally, record the task identifier if something fails, and download an acceptable result promptly. Uploaded media passes through managed storage and a third-party AI processing provider, so only submit content you are authorized to process and avoid unnecessary personal or confidential data.

For print, physical size equals pixel dimensions divided by the target DPI: at 300 DPI a 3000-pixel image prints about 10 inches wide, and a 1500-pixel image about 5 inches. Upscaling adds pixels so a file can meet a minimum-size requirement, but it does not recover print detail the source never captured. Confirm the printer or platform DPI requirement first, and judge sharpness at the final physical size rather than on screen.

Practical boundaries

  • A larger output is not proof of higher factual accuracy or authentic detail.
  • Every file is submitted separately; credit packs do not turn the tool into automatic batch processing.
  • Visual quality varies by source and settings, and no particular commercial outcome is guaranteed.
  • Review the live estimate before each submission because server-verified dimensions determine the final charge.

Scan, enhance, then confirm

Upload the page as a single image and keep the untouched scan as your record. Each document is one job.

  1. 01

    Upload the original asset

Start from the highest-quality file you still have. JPG, PNG, WEBP, and common video formats are supported by the matching tool.

  2. 02

    Choose the right enhancement mode

Use image upscaling for stills and video upscaling for motion. Credit packs fund several jobs, but each file is submitted and reviewed individually.

  3. 03

    Review and export

Check edges, faces, textures, text, and compression artifacts before downloading. The output still needs human approval for its intended use.

Readable is not the same as correct

A cleaner scan can look trustworthy while hiding a changed character, so proofreading never becomes optional.

  • Read every number, date and proper name against the paper original.
  • Check faint stamps, signatures, seals and margins for invented marks.
  • Confirm the page is not skewed, cropped, or missing an edge before you archive it.
  • Keep the original scan and download only the copy you have approved.

Test one page before a whole archive

Enhance a single representative page first and compare it with the untouched scan. Credit packs fund separate jobs, and there is no unattended batch, so every page is submitted and reviewed by a person.
