Scan the original at an appropriate optical resolution with neutral lighting, clean glass, correct focus, and no destructive automatic filters when possible. Preserve the full borders, annotations, studio marks, paper texture, and reverse-side information before cropping. Save a lossless archival master and work on a copy. A phone photo with glare, perspective distortion, shadows, or shallow focus gives the model inaccurate evidence and should be rescanned before enlargement.

Separate physical damage from missing visual information. Dust, scratches, folds, tears, stains, fading, silvering, and uneven exposure require different restoration judgments. The model may regularize asymmetry, invent an eye, complete a medal, change a letter, or create texture inside a damaged area. Those additions can be emotionally convincing and historically wrong. Mark uncertain regions and consult related photographs or knowledgeable family or archive staff.

Never infer identity, ethnicity, military unit, medical condition, legal fact, or event detail solely from the enhanced image. Keep a version history that distinguishes scanning, tonal correction, manual repair, AI enlargement, and later edits. If the result is displayed publicly, disclose that AI-assisted reconstruction was used and retain a link or reference to the untouched scan where appropriate.

The archival master should remain unchanged. A research derivative can receive conservative tonal correction while preserving ambiguous detail. A display derivative may accept more visible reconstruction for a family print or exhibit, but it should be labeled and reviewed at the final print size. Choose the lowest scale that supports that output; extreme enlargement can amplify paper grain and invite invented facial or fabric texture without adding trustworthy information.

Record scan settings, source ownership, consent where relevant, file checksum or identifier, edit sequence, scale, credit estimate, task ID, reviewer, and known uncertainties. Test the print profile, crop, paper, and viewing distance. Uploaded scans pass through managed storage and an external AI provider, so avoid confidential archives or living-person data unless you have authority and the handling is appropriate for the collection.
